CARRA y ZURRO - Spain

That’s our History

In 2002, we visited the town of Cariñena while looking for the best tempranillo and we fell in love with the garnacha and discovered the Cariñena (carignan) grape. We experienced some microvinification and three years later, the wines showed the class of what we define as great wines and that was the start of our project.

Our philosophy

We simply want to produce the best possible wines or benchmarks for the area of Aragon. All starts in the vineyard and our viticulture is minimalistic and organic. Like the best tomatoes, our grapes are fermented with little intervention in order to express the character of our true terroir.

Our philosophy

We simply want to produce the best possible wines or benchmarks for the area of Aragon. All starts in the vineyard and our viticulture is minimalistic and organic. Like the best tomatoes, our grapes are fermented with little intervention in order to express the character of our true terroir.

The climat & soil

With the help of Julio Prieto, our agronomist, we managed to identify the best terroirs in the area of Cariñena by digging holes to study the soil profiles, we finally selected 2 areas which we believed exceptional.

• Monte Alcañiz at 700 meters in altitude, the coolest with alluvial gravel deposit and clay on hard limestone.
• Monte Ducay, a 500 meters, which is on the path of a glacier as the stones and clay are at least 3,5 meters deep.

In theory continental, the climate is cool due to the higher altitudes and especially the Northern Summer breezes called “Cierzo”.

An exceptional territory

Cariñena and Aragon are the hiding places of some of the best kept secrets: black truffles, flavoursome olive oil from the high mountains in the South of Aragon, the widest selection of wild mushrooms and fruits, which explains why so often it is called the “Garden of Eden”.

Our Wineyard

We searched for old vineyards and found that few had the consistency and quality we looking for, so we planted our vineyards using massal selected material from France and Aragon as well as some of the best clones from France, Spain and California.

Our vineyards are bush vine, the only way to deal with water stress and optimize sun penetration and are planted with 5000 vines per hectare which is unusual for Spain. Organically managed and worked manually to perfection.

Wines

Our Range

CARRA GARNACHA

is a vineyard selection of the best garnacha with a small pourcentage of Cariñera and should be the ultimate expression of this sensual grape.

Wine The Carra Corte

Wine Zurdo CARIÑENA

Zurdo CARIÑENA

is our ambition of the best expression of the Cariñena grape which is so under rated.
